The Best PDF Page Size for Printing vs Screen Reading

When you export a document to PDF, your software almost always defaults to the physical paper size dominant in your region: US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) in North America, or A4 (210 x 297 mm) everywhere else.

This makes perfect sense if the document is destined for a laser printer. But in 2026, the vast majority of PDFs are never printed. They are read on 27-inch desktop monitors, 13-inch laptops, and 6-inch mobile screens.

Clinging to physical paper dimensions for digital documents is ruining the reading experience.

The Problem with Physical Paper Sizes on Screens

US Letter and A4 share a relatively tall, portrait aspect ratio. When a user opens a US Letter PDF on a horizontal widescreen desktop monitor, they have two terrible options:

1. Fit to Page: The entire page shrinks to fit the vertical height of the screen, leaving massive black bars on the left and right. The text becomes microscopic and unreadable.
2. Fit to Width: The text is large and readable, but only the top 30% of the page is visible. The user has to aggressively scroll up and down to read a single paragraph.

It gets even worse on mobile devices. A multi-column US Letter PDF viewed on a smartphone requires the user to pinch, zoom, and pan left and right continuously just to read a sentence.

The Ideal Size for Desktop Displays (16:9)

If you are designing a PDF presentation, a digital pitch deck, or a report that you know will be presented on a Zoom call or read on a monitor, ditch the portrait layout.

Set your document size to 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio) in landscape orientation.

When exported, this PDF will fill a user's entire screen perfectly. There is no awkward zooming or scrolling required. It functions exactly like a PowerPoint presentation, but with the universal compatibility of a PDF.

The Ideal Size for Mobile Reading

If you are publishing an eBook, a lead-magnet, or a whitepaper that will likely be consumed on mobile devices via email or social media links, portrait is correct—but US Letter is too wide.

Smartphones are narrow. The ideal custom page size for a mobile-first PDF is a 9:16 aspect ratio (the inverse of a desktop screen). Alternatively, many publishers use the iPad Mini dimensions (768 x 1024 pixels), which provides an excellent balance for both tablets and phones, requiring only vertical scrolling with highly legible text.

What If You Have to Print?

If a document absolutely must serve dual purposes—readable on a screen but legally required to be printed on standard paper—you have to optimize the margins and font sizes.

1. Use A4 or US Letter. (You can use our PDF converter to change the format if needed).
2. Massive Margins: Increase your left and right margins to at least 1.5 inches. This naturally narrows the text column, making it much easier for the human eye to track lines when reading on a wide screen.
3. Larger Fonts: Use a minimum of 12pt font. When the document is inevitably shrunk to fit a screen, the text will remain legible without zooming.

Stop treating the PDF as just a "digital piece of paper." It is a dynamic digital canvas. Size it for the screen that will actually display it.
